Sophs vs. Providence

The sophomore Spartans squeaked by the Providence Celtics in a close 3 game match.  Game one never saw either side take a commanding lead. With a one point lead it appeared that the Spartans were going to claim the game but a wide hit and two kills in a row the Celtics took the 1st game 25-27.  Not discouraged, the Spartans came back in game two. Taking advantage of the numerous Celtic short serves, the Spartans took the lead 15-14 and never looked back.  A strong decisive kill ended the game 25-17.  Game 3 was closer than the previous game and laced with strong blocks, saves and a few touch kills.  The Spartans took game three 25-22

Sophs vs Warriors

The St.Francis sophomores sailed past the Wheaton Academy Warriors Friday evening and put another check in the win column with a two game sweep. Game one was peppered with half a dozen kills and three aces that sealed the game 25-10.  Game two began with a strong double block that set the tone for the game. A couple of tips and two short serves by the warriors to close the game gave the Spartans the match with a 25-14 win.

Sophs at OPRF

The Sophomore Spartans took the Oak Park/River Forest Huskies to three games and came out on top to win the match.  The Spartans sailed through game one with consistent passing, quality digs and a couple of quick tips to keep OPRF off balance.  A huge kill ended the game 25-13.  Game 2 started slow with the Spartans quickly down 1-5.  St. Francis did battle back but never did take the lead and lost 22-25.   A fantastic kill to begin game 3 put the Spartan’s on the board first.  Although the lead did change numerous times early in the game, the Spartans quickly took charge. A couple of key kills and blocks put the Spartans out front midway through the game and they never looked back; winning 25-17 to take the match.

Sandburg Tourney

The Sophomore Spartans participated in the Sandburg invitation this Saturday and came away with a 3^rd place finish.  The round robin tournament began for the Spartans with the eventual champions of the tournament, Sandburg.  The Spartans lost in 2. Match two vs. the Providence Celtics was a close victory for the Spartans; after losing the 1^st game, St. Francis came back strong with a 2 game win to take the match.  Match 3 against a revengeful Marist Red hawks was close but the Spartans weren’t able to pick up the win in game 3 and lost the match.  Match 4 was against a strong Wheaton Warrenville South team.  WWS took the Spartans to 3 games but the Spartans endured and took the match.  The final match of the tournament was against the Naperville Central Red hawks.  Yet another close match with the lead going back and forth several times, the Spartans prevailed in 3 games.

Sophs vs Illiana

The Spartans had a rocky start against the Illiana Vikings Thursday night but were able to rally and pull out a victory in 3 games.  In game one, the Spartans came out strong with a 4-0 lead only to watch that lead slip away.  Down 23-24, the Spartans came back with two aces to take the lead 25-24; but the Vikings responded with key hits to take the game 25-27.  Game two, began with an 0-2 start before the Spartans rallied with two solid kills to take the lead 5-4.  They never looked back and won 25-19.  Game 3 was all St. Francis with solid serving to begin the game and a lead of 7-0.   Five more kills and two more aces gave the St. Francis Spartans the win in 3 25-11.

Sophs take first loss

The sophomore Spartans suffered their 1^st loss of the season to the St. Charles North North Stars.  St. Charles took an early lead in a 6-0 run before the Spartans ever got on the board. Unable to recover, the North Stars never gave up the lead and won 25-15.  The Spartans came close in game two; even tied St. Charles twice in the game 17-17 and again 19-19 but were unable to take the lead.  The Spartans lost 25-19.

Sophs defeat Redwings

The sophomore Spartans continue their perfect season with a win against the Benet Redwings on Wednesday.  At one point Benet had the lead 16-12.  Spot on serves and key blocking brought the Spartans back within one.  In an attempt to change momentum, the Redwings took a time out.  However, the Spartans were not deterred and took the win 25-19.  In game two, the Spartans took an early lead 9-7 with a 5 point service run.  The Spartans never gave up the lead and won 25-18.
