The season comes to a close…

June 1, 2011

St Francis finished off the season with 2 strong performances, defeating Metea Valley on Tuesday night in 2 games, and giving Glenbard East a tough fight for the Regional Title on Wednesday at home. The Spartans came up short, losing to Glenbard East in 3 sets, but delivered a gutsy performance, coming from behind several times to close the gap.

There were several seasonal highlights:

*Winning the Benet Invitational:  Spartans went 5-0 for the tourney

*Beating Benet Academy twice

*Defeating Glenbard West 3 times out of the 4 matches played

*Runner-Up at the Glenbard East Springfest Tournament:  Spartans went 4-1 for tourney

Another great season for Coach Lynch and Assistant coaches Ston and Roschmann.

Thanks to the Mordell family for going above and beyond all season long for this great group of boys and their families.

Benet Tournament Champions!

May 1, 2011

St Francis has won back –to back championships at the Benet Academy Tournament, and delivered the title with some outstanding team play! There were many hard-fought battles to get to the playoff round, and the Spartans overcame deficits and stepped up when the games were on the line to go undefeated for the tournament. Record improves to 22-7.

We won our pool by defeating Waubonsie Valley in 3 games (25-20, 24-26, 17-15),   Glenbard West (25-22, 17-25, 15-11), and Morton (27-25, 25-17). In each match, we came from behind near the end of one the games to deliver the match point win.

We finished 1st in our pool, and had a Gold Division playoff match with Benet Academy, who finished 2nd in their pool.  We lost a competitive first set 26-28, but came back with spirited wins in the next two games to win 25-18, 25-17.

In the championship match, we again faced Glenbard West, who had defeated Neuqua Valley in 2 sets. Their confidence lead them to a first game win 14-25; but the Spartans brushed it off and came back to deliver a strong 25-21 win in the second game. In game 3 the Spartans kept the lead most of the game, but allowed Glenbard West to slip past them and take a 22-24 lead.  Some magic was drawn up in the timeout huddle, and the Spartans cruised ahead with 4 unanswered points to take the game 26-24 and win the championship.

It was a true coming-of-age weekend for the Spartan team, where the Seniors lead the charge for their younger teammates, and won the matches in true team fashion. Hats off to the Seniors for delivering all weekend long!

Special shout-outs to Jack Mordell and Nick Konchel on being selected to the

All-Tournament team. We are proud of you both!!

Spartans vs. Illiana

May 1, 2011

Spartans over Illiana Christian:

St Francis hosted Illiana Christian and served up a dominating win, 25-11, 25-20.

Our record improves to 17-7.

Next up: Benet Tournament this weekend!

Congrats Jack Mo!

April 26, 2011

Congratulations to Jack Mordell on being named to the 2011 All Tournament Team for the Brother Rice Smack Attack. He continues the family tradition, as his brother Joe was named to the 2010 All Tournament Team. Very well deserved honor, Jack!
